In Colorado, we are fortunate enough to have four distinct seasons. But as beautiful as winter can be, it can also wreak havoc on your yard. With the colder temperatures and shorter days, your grass and plants can become dormant, leaving your yard looking dull and lifeless. But there are some simple things you can do to keep your yard looking healthy and green all winter long.
Fertilize in the Fall
One of the best things you can do for your Colorado lawn is to fertilize in the fall. Fertilizing in the fall helps your grass develop strong roots that will withstand the harshness of winter. It will also give your grass the nutrients it needs to green up quickly in the spring. Be sure to use a fertilizer that is specifically designed for cool-season grasses, such as Kentucky bluegrass or fescue.
Water Deeply and Infrequently
Even though Colorado winters are relatively dry, your grass and plants still need water to stay healthy. The key is to water deeply and infrequently. Watering deeply encourages your plants' roots to grow deep into the soil, which makes them more drought-tolerant. And watering infrequently trains your plants to develop deeper roots in search of moisture, which also makes them more drought-tolerant. A good rule of thumb is to water once a week for 30 minutes using a sprinkler with an adjustable nozzle so that you don't overdo it.
Mow High
During the winter months, you should raise the height of your mower so that you're only removing the top third of the grass blade. This may seem counterintuitive, but longer grass blades actually protect the crowns of your grass plants from freezing temperatures. And since photosynthesis slows down during winter, there's no need to remove more than the top third of the blade anyway.
Conclusion:
With just a few simple steps, you can keep your Colorado yard looking great all winter long. Be sure to fertilize in the fall, water deeply and infrequently, and raise the height of your mower. By following these tips, you'll have a green and healthy yard that will be the envy of your neighborhood all season long!
